*Genoa is a city pressed between mountains and the sea. Because of this unique geographical condition, the city of Genoa can be described both as a coastal city and a mountainous one.

The mountains, sea, and buildings define the current condition of Genoa. The boundary between mountain (where people play and spend time outdoors), and city (the hub of activities), and city and sea (area dedicated for viewing and sea-watching) can be seen in this diagram.

This diagram shows how the different elements of the port terminal uses the city as an organizational reference. The Promenade (blue), becomes the area dedicated to viewing. The long rectangular buildings (terminal, shops, and other program in pink) lie in between the promenade and the green spaces, and become the hub of activities. And the green spaces (green) which is composed of parks and play areas.
